Name: Joanne Wilder
Occupation: On Air Personality Q107
How long have you lived in YR? I have lived in York Region on and off my whole life. I was born in Thornhill and spent part of my childhood there. I’ve moved around quite a bit but we’ve been in Newmarket now for a good 10 years.
Why did you make YR home?
Definitely the convenience and sense of community. It’s been so nice for my kids to be able to walk to school and have all their activities close by when they were little. There are some great neighbourhoods and things to do here for the whole family.
What do you do for fun in YR?
It’s changed over the years. When the kids were younger we went to Canada’s Wonderland every summer and at Halloween for Haunt. So much fun. Now I enjoy Main St downtown Newmarket where you can hit a patio, dine in the many fantastic restaurants or grab a tea from The Fresh Tea Shop and walk through Fairy Lake.
What is one summer/winter event that you never miss in YR?
In the summer I love to run the trails. I actually enjoy it in the fall too when the leaves are falling and it’s so pretty, In the winter we always go skating. They light up all the trees in downtown Newmarket near Riverwalk Commons. It makes winter not so bad lol.
What are your favourite restaurants in YR?
There are some amazing restaurants in York Region. I often meet friends at East Beaver Creek in Richmond Hill where there’s some great places to choose from but we mostly visit the ones near us in Newmarket. Made in Mexico’s fish tacos and their sangria and margaritas are the best. If we are doing takeout most of the time we grab Molisana’s, they make delicious italian food and Pho Viet Star for their pho and Bao sandwich.
What YR attractions/events/happenings would you recommend to friends who visit YR?
The shopping, the farmer’s market the trails and parks I enjoy them all and would recommend to anyone to come and visit. We are lucky to have all that we have here.
